About Chico Housing Action Team
Founded in 2013, the Chico Housing Action Team (CHAT) emerged as a grassroots response to the escalating homelessness crisis in Butte County. A dedicated group of community members recognized the urgent need for innovative housing solutions, particularly for those living without shelter. Their initial focus was on exploring alternative housing options, such as tiny houses, while also addressing immediate needs through cold weather shelters.
Our Journey
CHAT's first significant initiative was the launch of a cold weather shelter, collaborating with local organizations like the Peace and Justice Shelter and the Jesus Center. This effort laid the groundwork for a deeper understanding of homelessness and the necessity for permanent housing solutions. In 2015, CHAT opened its first rental house, marking the beginning of the Housing Now Program, which provided shared housing for individuals experiencing homelessness.
Over the years, CHAT has expanded its services to support various demographics, including youth, families, veterans, and individuals with mental health challenges. With a dedicated staff of over 30 and a strong volunteer base, CHAT continues to honor its commitment to providing stable, sustainable housing for those in need.
