Our Story
Founded in 2002 by Lemuel 'Life' LaRoche, Chess and Community began as a therapeutic initiative using chess to guide adolescents in the juvenile justice system. The establishment of the Classic City Knights chess club provided a constructive alternative to street life. In 2012, the first Chess and Community Conference was launched, addressing youth development and community issues. Today, the organization empowers youth through innovative programs in chess, robotics, and debate.
