Our Story

Founded in 1960, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad (CARS) emerged from a critical need for emergency medical services in the community. Before CARS, local citizens relied on friends or funeral homes for transportation to hospitals, often without any first-aid training. The tragic collapse of a building in 1958 highlighted the urgent need for a dedicated rescue squad. Joel Cochran and Ted Patterson, along with other community members, took action by collecting equipment and teaching first-aid classes. On November 15, 1960, CARS began its mission to provide essential first-aid services to the citizens of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

Impact

Today, CARS volunteers respond to over 6,500 calls each year, accounting for approximately 75% of the City of Charlottesville’s EMS calls and 16% of Albemarle County’s EMS transports.
