Chaparral House
EIN: 23-7146893 · Berkeley, CA
Our Story
In the early 1970s, Marion and Wally Johnson recognized a pressing need for quality senior housing and care options in Berkeley after caring for an elderly family member. This concern led to the establishment of Chaparral Foundation in 1971, with the vision of creating a model non-profit intermediate care facility. Ground was broken on February 14, 1977, and Chaparral House opened its doors on November 1, 1978, becoming the only independent non-profit skilled nursing eldercare community in the city, dedicated to providing a nurturing environment for frail elders.
