Our Story

In 1960, a group of dedicated parents faced a daunting challenge: their adult children with severe Cerebral Palsy had nowhere to go. United by their shared struggles, they founded Cerebral Palsy of Northwest Indiana, Inc. in Gary, Indiana. Under the leadership of Martha Turulis, a passionate Special Education Teacher, the organization began its journey to provide essential services for individuals with disabilities.

Despite initial funding challenges, the program flourished, expanding to include an extended day nursery and daycare program that offered tailored Physical, Speech, and Occupational Therapy for children with Cerebral Palsy. With the support of the John W. Anderson Foundation, the center relocated to Hobart/New Chicago, becoming the first state-licensed center in Indiana dedicated to children with disabilities.

Over the decades, the center evolved significantly. In the 1980s, Patricia Starbuck took the helm as Executive Director, continuing the mission until 2011. The 1990s brought major renovations, enhancing accessibility and expanding services for adults. The 2000s saw a transformation of the Adult Program into a classroom environment, focusing on daily living skills and academics.

In a pivotal moment, the organization rebranded as the Center for Possibilities, reflecting its commitment to unlocking the potential of every individual. Collaborations with the National Inclusion Project led to the creation of inclusive summer camps, fostering friendships among children with and without disabilities. Additionally, the Family Counseling Program was launched to support families lacking insurance or financial means.

Today, the Center for Possibilities is proud to be a Paths of Quality Provider, Indiana’s highest level of childcare services, and continues to explore innovative ways to enhance the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
