About Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras
Founded in 1947 by music educator Howard Pence, the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras (CKYO) began with just 14 string players and has since blossomed into a vibrant community of over 450 young musicians. This organization is one of the oldest independently chartered youth orchestras in the United States, dedicated to providing exceptional learning and performance opportunities for talented youth. CKYO offers six orchestras, including Symphony, Concert, and Jazz Arts, along with community programs that enrich the cultural landscape of Central Kentucky.
Impact of CKYO
CKYO plays a vital role in the lives of young musicians, offering music education and performance opportunities that foster personal growth and community engagement. Through initiatives like CKYO in the Schools and MusicWorks, the organization ensures that music education is accessible to all students in the region.
