Central Iowa Shelter & Services
EIN: 42-1394212 · Des Moines, IA
Our Story
In 1992, a tragic event shook the community of Des Moines when five men lost their lives to the freezing winter temperatures, denied shelter due to intoxication. This heartbreaking incident ignited a response from eight local churches, leading to the creation of Churches United, a traveling homeless shelter. Over time, the need for a sustainable solution became clear, prompting the establishment of a permanent facility in 1995. In 2006, the organization rebranded as Central Iowa Shelter & Services (CISS) to better reflect its mission. Today, CISS operates from a 42,000-square-foot facility, providing 231 beds, including emergency shelter, transitional housing for veterans, and efficiency apartments.
