Our Story

Catawba Riverkeeper is the only non-profit, on-the-water advocate for the entire 8,900 miles of waterways in the Catawba-Wateree River Basin. Founded in 1997, this organization is dedicated to protecting and restoring the Catawba River and its tributaries through advocacy, education, and community engagement. Inspired by the Riverkeeper movement of the 1970s, Catawba Riverkeeper believes that water belongs to all people and employs a professional staff of scientists and advocates, supported by a network of volunteers and community members.

Our Impact

In 2023 alone, Catawba Riverkeeper successfully removed 100,000 pounds of trash from local waterways and educated over 900 K-12 students. With the help of 481 volunteers, nearly 25,000 pounds of trash were removed from lakes and streams. The organization also monitors water quality through its Swim Guide program, sampling 60 sites weekly for E. coli, advocating for better water quality protections across the basin.
