Our Story

The Catawba Lands Conservancy was founded in 1991 by Mary McDaniel, a passionate local schoolteacher. Recognizing the urgent need to protect the rapidly developing land around Mountain Island Lake, a crucial drinking water source, Mary rallied a group of ecologists and activists. Their efforts led to a successful bond referendum in Mecklenburg County, paving the way for the establishment of the Catawba Lands Conservancy. Today, this organization proudly protects over 17,000 acres across six counties in the Carolina Piedmont.

Impact

With a commitment to conservation, Catawba Lands Conservancy has successfully conserved over 17,800 acres of land, safeguarded 161 miles of water frontage, and opened over 400 miles of the Carolina Thread Trail to the public. These efforts significantly enhance local conservation initiatives and provide the community with access to nature.
