Our Story
In 2019, compassionate parishioners from Christ Church Cathedral embarked on a journey to the southern border, witnessing firsthand the plight of individuals fleeing violence, persecution, and poverty. Their experiences at shelters and refugee encampments revealed a dire need for comprehensive support services for those seeking asylum in the United States. In early 2022, after visiting an emergency shelter in Houston overwhelmed with families in need, they recognized the urgent demand for a new facility that could provide holistic care.
With the generous support of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas and seed funding from Christ Church Cathedral, Casa Mateo was established to serve as a sanctuary for displaced immigrants and asylum seekers. Inspired by successful models in Austin, this initiative aims to create a safe haven where individuals can find hope, hospitality, and essential resources.
