About Casa Central

In the 1950s, the vibrant streets of West Town, Logan Square, and Humboldt Park echoed with the sounds of Polish, Yiddish, Ukrainian, and Spanish languages, reflecting the rich tapestry of immigrant cultures in Chicago. Amidst this diversity, many newcomers faced challenges in adapting to urban life, struggling to secure housing, food, and employment. In response to these pressing needs, a group of dedicated Hispanic pastors established Casa Central Evangelica in 1954, a community center aimed at providing essential support to immigrants.

Under the leadership of Reverend Daniel Alvarez, who joined in 1964, Casa Central evolved from a modest operation with a budget of $26,000 and three staff members into the largest Hispanic social service agency in the Midwest. Today, with over 550 employees, Casa Central serves nearly 20,000 individuals annually, offering a wide range of programs that address the needs of children, families, and seniors.
