Our Story
For nearly 40 years, Iris Domestic Violence Center has been a beacon of hope for survivors of domestic violence in the Greater Baton Rouge area. Established in 1979 following a city-wide needs assessment, the organization was created to address the alarming lack of services for battered women and their children. The first emergency shelter opened its doors in February 1981, providing a safe haven for those in need. Since then, Iris has expanded its services to include a 24-hour crisis hotline, legal advocacy, and community outreach programs.
Today, Iris operates a comprehensive support system for individuals affected by domestic violence, offering trauma-informed care and confidential services free of charge. With outreach offices in Ascension, Iberville, and West Baton Rouge Parishes, Iris is dedicated to serving all members of the community, regardless of background.
