Our Story
The story of Camp Young Judaea is one of faith, dedication, and perseverance, encapsulated in the phrase 'When Dreams Come True.' Founded in 1952 by Rabbi Ammon Prero and three dedicated men—Harry Lipshy, Morris Shapiro, and Morris Wolf—this camp was born from a vision to create a space where children could learn about Judaism and Israel. With a commitment to inclusivity, no child is turned away due to financial constraints. Over the years, Camp Young Judaea has grown significantly, now situated on 240 acres in the beautiful Hill Country of Woodcreek, Texas, featuring 22 cabins and serving over 600 summer campers annually.
Impact
Camp Young Judaea reaches nearly five thousand children through year-round retreats, fostering a supportive environment for Jewish youth to explore their identity. Many campers are the children of alumni who cherish their transformative experiences at CYJ, which have played a crucial role in their development into engaged Jewish adults. The camp has also been a place for lifelong connections, with at least 30 couples having met and married through their shared experiences at camp.
