About Camp Yakety Yak
Founded in 2010 by Angela Arterberry Sullivan, Camp Yakety Yak emerged from a personal need for accommodating activities for children with ADHD. After struggling to find suitable camps for her son Ethan, Angela took matters into her own hands, starting the first camp in her backyard with the help of local middle school students. What began as a small initiative has blossomed into a thriving 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a safe, fun, and educational environment for children with special needs and their neurotypical peers.
Our Mission
Camp Yakety Yak aims to foster social and emotional skills in children with special needs while offering hands-on experience for future professionals in educational and therapeutic fields. The camp not only supports friendship development among campers but also serves as a training ground for college students pursuing careers in speech-language pathology and occupational therapy.
Impact of Camp Yakety Yak
Over the years, Camp Yakety Yak has successfully created specialized programs to meet the diverse needs of its campers. Initiatives like the 'Buddies' program and the Junior Camp Counselor (JCC) program have been developed to ensure that every child receives the support they need. The camp's unique 'Reverse Inclusion' model encourages neurotypical siblings to participate, enriching the experience for all involved.
