Our Story
In September 2004, CAL FIRE President/CEO Kevin O’Meara was assigned as the Family Liaison for the Schicke family after the tragic loss of firefighter Eva Marie Schicke in the Tuolumne Fire. Witnessing the urgent need for financial support for grieving families, Kevin rallied fellow firefighters to create a solution. This led to the formation of the CAL FIRE Benevolent Foundation in August 2005, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to providing immediate assistance to firefighters and their families in times of need. Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed over one million dollars to support those affected by tragedy, including burn victims through partnerships with the Firefighters Burn Institute and other burn centers across California.
Impact
Since 2005, the CAL FIRE Benevolent Foundation has made a profound impact on the lives of California firefighters and their families. The primary fundraising event, the Invitational Golf Tournament/Wine Tasting, along with individual donations, has enabled the Foundation to provide critical support during personal crises. In 2020 alone, 21 firefighters received assistance after losing their homes to devastating wildfires, showcasing the Foundation's commitment to "taking care of our own." Over $246,000 has been allocated directly to families in need, ensuring that help is always available.
