Our Story

For over 35 years, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper has been the guardian of Western New York’s fresh water, playing a crucial role in the Great Lakes basin. Founded in 1989 as Friends of the Buffalo River, the organization has transformed a once-dead waterway into a thriving ecosystem. Today, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper manages over 70 construction projects, community engagement programs, and advocacy campaigns to ensure clean water for families and future generations.

Impact

Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper’s advocacy efforts focus on collaborating with partners, municipalities, and elected officials to protect New York State’s Great Lakes and shoreline ecosystems. The organization has successfully restored nearly two miles of shoreline and 20 acres of habitat along the Buffalo River, engaging in over 60 projects annually to safeguard freshwater resources.
