Our Story

Buddy System MIA was founded in response to the unprecedented needs of the Miami community during the COVID-19 pandemic. A dedicated team of local volunteers transformed a small mutual-aid program into a diverse county-wide nonprofit, serving over 5,000 individuals with access to free, healthy food. The initial distributions began with compassion and determination to share during isolation, and that ethos has carried us into establishing 10 Community Fridges, a robust volunteer-client pairing Homebound Food Access Program, and three monthly food distributions supporting vulnerable populations.

Our Impact

Buddy System MIA has created a network of Community Fridges across Miami-Dade County, changing the landscape of food insecurity. These fridges deliver community support to food deserts with a simple message: take what you need, leave what you can. This initiative has provided thousands of people experiencing food insecurity with free, healthy food, while each fridge also serves as a unique piece of community art.
