Our Story

BU-GATA, founded in 1992, emerged from the Gates of Arlington apartment complex as a grassroots tenant organization. With a majority Latino population facing displacement, residents united to advocate for their housing rights and representation before local officials. As the organization evolved, it expanded its mission to include community stability and youth leadership development, culminating in the establishment of the Buckingham Youth Brigade in 1998.

Impact

Since its inception, BU-GATA has played a crucial role in maintaining socioeconomic diversity in the Buckingham neighborhood. Through dedicated advocacy, the organization has preserved 1,217 affordable housing units and secured thousands of dollars in relocation benefits for residents facing displacement.
