Brooklyn Queens Land Trust

Our Story

In 1999, the future of New York City’s public garden spaces was threatened by a plan to auction off 112 community gardens. Hundreds of dedicated gardeners rallied together, organizing protests and filing lawsuits to protect these vital green spaces. With the support of then Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, the auction was halted, leading to a landmark agreement in 2002 that saved 69 gardens as permanent open spaces. This pivotal moment laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Brooklyn Queens Land Trust (BQLT) in 2004, which now manages 35 community gardens across Brooklyn and Queens.
