In 2010, the Joplin Schools Board of Education faced a pressing challenge: how to improve graduation rates in a community grappling with poverty and limited parental involvement. Recognizing that education is a community issue, not just a school issue, the Joplin Schools initiated a collaborative effort to address the basic needs of students. This led to the creation of Bright Futures, a program designed to connect students and families with essential community resources.

Building a Network of Support

With the support of the Economic Security Corporation of Southwest Missouri, Bright Futures established a liaison position within the schools to bridge the gap between educational institutions and community organizations. The results were remarkable: dropout rates decreased, attendance improved, and both student and staff morale soared. As the success of Bright Futures Joplin became evident, neighboring districts sought to implement the framework, leading to the establishment of Bright Futures USA in 2011.

Impacting Communities Nationwide

Today, Bright Futures USA is a national leader in community resiliency and engagement, actively supporting over 70 communities across the country. By fostering partnerships and aligning local resources, Bright Futures helps tackle critical issues such as food insecurity, attendance, and mentorship, impacting over 200,000 students. The grassroots network has mobilized more than 1 million volunteer hours and established over 2,000 community partnerships, demonstrating the power of collective action.
