Our Story

Founded in 1927 by Margaret Lane Washington, Bridges for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing began as a response to the lack of local services for individuals with hearing loss. After losing her hearing, Margaret became a certified lip reading teacher and started the first class at the Watkins Institute in Nashville. Over the decades, Bridges has evolved to provide comprehensive services for individuals from birth to senior years, focusing on education, outreach, and advocacy for the D/deaf, Deaf-Blind, and hard of hearing communities.

Impact

Bridges serves Tennessee, northern Alabama, southern Kentucky, and parts of Mississippi, Arkansas, Virginia, and North Carolina. The organization provides education, outreach, case management, and interpreting services, fostering a vibrant community of equality and access for individuals with hearing loss.
