Our Story

In the late 1960s, a group of dedicated women from the Sisters of St. Joseph began reaching out to disadvantaged youth in Boston and Cambridge. They provided sandwiches, cold drinks, and supportive counseling, which evolved into a structured approach as traditional services proved inadequate for the growing homeless population. Founded in 1970 under the leadership of Sister Barbara Whelan, Sister Marie Keough, and Sister Barbara Scanlon, Bridge Over Troubled Waters became a national model for youth services, developing innovative programs to support vulnerable youth on their journey towards self-sufficiency.

Impact

Bridge Over Troubled Waters provides effective and innovative services to runaway, homeless, and high-risk youth, helping them avoid a lifetime of dependency on social services.
