About Brethren Housing Association

Brethren Housing Association (BHA) began as a vision of two Church of the Brethren congregations dedicated to assisting individuals and families facing homelessness. Through the compassionate efforts of congregation pastors, BHA has grown into a vital organization that provides housing and counseling services. Over the years, more congregations joined as members, expanding the reach and impact of BHA.

In the mid-1990s, recognizing the need for professional case management, BHA partnered with Delta Housing, Inc. This collaboration allowed BHA to support 16 families in its apartments. By 2001, BHA transitioned to hiring its own program staff, leading to significant growth in programs, properties, and staff throughout the 2000s.

In 2007, BHA received a capacity-building grant from the White House Office of Faith-Based Organizations, which facilitated a strategic planning process. This initiative culminated in the launch of the 20/20 Vision Campaign in 2010, aiming to raise $2.25 million for organizational expansion. The campaign exceeded expectations, raising over $2.52 million by 2013, doubling BHA's housing capacity and introducing new programs.

In 2014, BHA partnered with PinnacleHealth Systems to construct the Hummel Street Townhouses, featuring three new townhomes with a spacious yard and garden, a rare addition to the Allison Hill community. Today, BHA operates two programs—Transitions and Next Steps—manages 16 parcels of land for 24 apartments and two houses, and employs eight full-time staff members. With the support of 13 member churches and numerous congregations, businesses, and grant-making organizations, BHA continues to expand its housing services, providing permanently affordable housing units throughout Dauphin County.

During FY 2022-2023, BHA returned 86 cents of every dollar back into its programs, helping families experiencing homelessness build a hopeful future through stable housing, loving relationships, and supportive services.
