Our Story

The Bremerton Backpack Brigade began in 2010 when Rhiannon Lawson, a dedicated teacher at Naval Avenue Elementary School, noticed students taking extra food from the cafeteria. Recognizing their unmet nutritional needs, Ms. Lawson and her team initiated a program to send home backpacks filled with nutritious food every Friday. This effort soon merged with similar initiatives at Armin Jahr Elementary School, led by Myra Battin and Ann Horn, forming the Bremerton Backpack Brigade.

Our Impact

Since its inception, the Brigade has expanded to serve all six Bremerton Elementary Schools and Catalyst Charter School, ensuring families have access to fresh, nutritious food. By addressing weekend hunger, the Brigade supports academic achievement and fosters community engagement, helping to break the cycle of poverty.
