Our Story
For over a century, Breathe Pennsylvania has been at the forefront of the battle against lung disease. Established in 1905 with the opening of the Pittsburgh Sanatorium, known as the 'House on the Hill,' the organization initially provided tuberculosis patients with the only remedy available at the time: rest and fresh air. Over the years, Breathe PA has evolved through various names, including the Christmas Seal League and the American Lung Association of Western Pennsylvania, but its mission remains steadfast—offering vital lung health education and direct services to residents across Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Impact in 2023
In 2023, Breathe PA expanded its tobacco programming into central Pennsylvania, reaching communities in Dauphin and Chester counties. The innovative Smokeless Saturday program received over 1,000 referrals and educated nearly 800 students across 118 schools and 80 school districts. Additionally, Breathe PA provided financial assistance for 45 patients to attend Pulmonary Rehabilitation and delivered critical respiratory medication to nearly 90 individuals, ensuring that lung health education and support are accessible to all.
