Our Story

The Bonobo Conservation Initiative (BCI) was founded 25 years ago by Sally Jewell Coxe and a dedicated group of individuals committed to protecting bonobos and their rainforest habitat. As the only international organization solely focused on bonobo conservation, BCI emphasizes local leadership and community involvement in its efforts. The organization aims to create the Bonobo Peace Forest, a network of community-managed reserves where both bonobos and local communities can thrive.

Our Impact

BCI has successfully protected 9 million acres of rainforest habitat, establishing a network of community-managed reserves that allow bonobos to thrive in a protected environment. For 25 years, BCI has collaborated with local communities to promote sustainable practices and provide livelihood programs that benefit both people and wildlife.
