Our Story
Bluelaces Theater Company began as a dream of five undergraduate theater and psychology majors at Northwestern University. Initially known as Theatre Stands with Autism (TSWA), the founders produced their first two productions, Diving In! and Strung Along, specifically for children with autism. With the support of the Purple Crayon Players, these productions reached nearly 100 audience members, receiving positive feedback from parents and educators alike.
In June 2014, Bluelaces was officially formed in New York City, expanding its mission to include individuals of all ages and developmental differences. The company creates immersive, multi-sensory theater experiences that encourage sensory and social play in a safe, nonjudgmental environment.
Impact
Bluelaces Theater Company is dedicated to making the arts accessible for audiences with autism and other developmental disabilities.
Why Donate?
Today, 1 in 5 children is born with a developmental disability, and many struggle to attend traditional theater performances. Bluelaces provides a unique opportunity for these individuals to experience art in a way that celebrates their differences. With a “pay what you can” system, Bluelaces ensures that everyone can enjoy the magic of theater without financial barriers. Your donations help develop productions, workshops, and tours that serve this vital community. Together, we can create a more inclusive world through the arts.
