About BLUEBARN Theatre

Founded in the late 1980s by graduates of the Professional Theatre Training Conservatory at the State University of New York at Purchase, BLUEBARN Theatre emerged from a desire to create compelling theatre outside the confines of New York City’s commercial market. The journey began with a modest production of "America in Pieces," which sparked overwhelming community interest and laid the foundation for a vibrant artistic community in Omaha.

Our Journey

After two seasons at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, BLUEBARN renovated an empty storefront in downtown Omaha, establishing a black box performance space that served as its home for six years. The theatre quickly gained momentum, producing original scripts and expanding its repertoire with innovative works that challenged both artists and audiences.

Despite facing challenges, including the loss of its original venue in 1997, BLUEBARN adapted by performing in various unique locations, showcasing its resilience and commitment to the arts. In 1998, the theatre found a new home in Omaha’s Old Market, further solidifying its presence in the community.

Impact and Achievements

BLUEBARN Theatre has produced over 100 plays, including award-winning productions that have garnered national attention. The theatre has participated in significant events, such as the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial and the New York City International Fringe Theatre Festival. In 2015, BLUEBARN opened its new theatre at 10th & Pacific, designed to enhance the artistic experience for both performers and audiences.
