Our Story

In 1968, a group of visionary parents in Bloomington came together with a shared dream: to bring Montessori education to their community. Inspired by the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori, they embarked on a journey that would transform the educational landscape for their children. By 1971, they had hired their first credentialed Montessori teacher, and by 1973, Bloomington Montessori School was thriving with 25 Early Childhood students. The school continued to grow, opening its doors to Lower Elementary students in 1982 and Upper Elementary students in 1984. In 1983, the school moved into its own facility, a testament to the dedication and hard work of its founders.

Over the years, BMS has expanded its offerings, establishing a fourth Early Childhood class in 2012 and adding two Lower Elementary classrooms. Today, BMS serves 60 all-day Early Childhood students, 60 half-day Early Childhood students, 66 Lower Elementary students, and 48 Upper Elementary students. Celebrating its 55th anniversary in 2023, BMS is fully accredited by the American Montessori Society and validated by the United Montessori Schools of Indiana, proudly serving Bloomington and surrounding communities.
