Empowering Black Communities Through Organizing

The Black Organizing Project (BOP) was founded in 2009 to address the urgent need for prioritizing Black voices in organizing spaces. In the wake of significant events that shaped the Black experience, including the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the tragic killing of Oscar Grant, BOP emerged as a beacon of hope and resilience. This grassroots organization has dedicated itself to building Black community power and developing leaders in Oakland and across the Bay Area.

A Legacy of Resilience and Storytelling

For centuries, storytelling has been a powerful tool for Black communities, allowing them to connect, heal, and reclaim their narratives. BOP harnesses this power by listening to the community and ensuring that those most impacted by systemic injustices are at the forefront of the work. The organization has become a refuge for many, fostering a space where Black individuals can come together to learn, organize, and support one another.
