Founded in 2017 by Timnit Gebru and Rediet Abebe, Black in AI emerged from the urgent need for greater representation of Black individuals in the artificial intelligence field. The stark underrepresentation highlighted at the Neural Information Systems Conference in 2016 galvanized the creation of this organization, which aims to shift power dynamics and empower Black thinkers and creators in AI.
To date, Black in AI has granted over $1 million to support more than 400 AI practitioners, significantly enhancing representation in the field.
