Our Story

The Black Heritage Community Cemetery (BHCC) is dedicated to restoring and maintaining a historic cemetery in Sanford, North Carolina, that dates back to the early 1800s. This sacred site holds the graves of hundreds of African-Americans, many of whom were enslaved. Initiated by a passionate group of volunteers led by Lisa Martin Sanders, the organization aims to reclaim this neglected cemetery and honor those buried there.

Our Impact

BHCC is committed to restoring this historically significant cemetery, ensuring that the memory of African-Americans buried here is honored. The organization has begun clearing the site and plans to erect a wrought-iron fence to protect and preserve the graves.
