Our Story

In 2015, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston's report, 'Color of Wealth in Boston,' revealed a staggering racial wealth gap, with Black Bostonians holding a median net worth of just $8 compared to $247,500 for white residents. This alarming statistic galvanized nearly 1,000 Black residents to gather at the Prince Hall auditorium in Dorchester, sparking discussions on how to combat this crisis. From these conversations, the Black Economic Council of Massachusetts (BECMA) was born, founded by key business leaders committed to reversing the trend of declining Black wealth in the city. BECMA focuses on advocating for the support and sustainability of Black businesses across the Commonwealth, recognizing their vital role in driving Black wealth and employment.

Our Impact

Thanks to the generous support of our funders, BECMA has awarded $175,000 in small grants to 40 Black businesses and $15,000 to entrepreneurs exploring opportunities in the electric vehicle sector. Our mission extends to helping Black founders launch ventures in emerging industries, fostering economic growth and resilience.
