About Lifecycle Wellness and Birth Center

Founded in 1978, Lifecycle Wellness and Birth Center, originally known as The Birth Center, was the first licensed free-standing birth center in Pennsylvania. Established as a 501c3 charitable organization, it arose from a community need for family-centered care during the childbearing years. Visionary midwives, alongside their physician and community allies, opened a center staffed by certified nurse-midwives and registered nurses. Over the years, the team has expanded to include nurse practitioners, lactation consultants, and childbirth educators, all dedicated to providing exceptional care.

Our Journey

Initially housed in a cozy Victorian home in Bryn Mawr, Lifecycle has grown significantly since its inception. In 1985, the center successfully financed and purchased its building, allowing for renovations that included two full birthing suites and additional facilities. As interest in out-of-hospital birth surged, the center recognized the need for expansion. In 2005, Lifecycle moved to a modern three-story building, enhancing its capacity to provide education and support to families.

Community Impact

Lifecycle has welcomed over 14,000 babies since its inception, celebrating the milestone of 10,000 births in 2014. The center has continually adapted to meet the needs of the community, including the opening of a satellite office in South Philadelphia in 2017. In 2021, Lifecycle expanded its facilities to further enhance clinical services and educational offerings, ensuring that families receive compassionate, evidence-based care.

Commitment to Inclusivity

Lifecycle is proud to serve a diverse client population, offering exceptional gynecological, perinatal, and postpartum care. The center's commitment to inclusivity is reflected in its expanded services, which cater to families of all kinds. In 2024, Lifecycle was renamed to reflect its dedication to a wellness model of care, promoting greater inclusivity within the community.
