Our Story

The Birmingham Zoo, originally known as The Jimmy Morgan Zoo, opened its doors in 1955 with the arrival of its first elephant, Mona. Established through community efforts led by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the zoo has evolved into a private non-profit organization dedicated to conservation and education since 1999. Significant improvements and expansions have been made, including the formation of the Birmingham Zoological Society to support its mission.

Impact

As a national leader in elephant conservation, the Birmingham Zoo ranks in the top 10 percent of animal holding facilities in the nation. The zoo has regained accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and has launched major capital campaigns to enhance its facilities and educational programs.
