Empowering BIPOC Youth and Families

In early 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic devastated communities, the BIPOC Support Foundation (BSF) was founded by DeMilo Young to address the disproportionate impact on small BIPOC business owners. Recognizing that many were excluded from federal relief efforts, BSF stepped in to provide emergency hardship grants and marketing resources to 18 BIPOC-owned businesses. However, it became clear that addressing systemic inequities required a broader, sustained effort, particularly for BIPOC youth and their families.

Listening to the community revealed that long-term outcomes for BIPOC youth were deeply affected by barriers in education, access to resources, and social support. In 2021, BSF shifted its focus to empower BIPOC youth and their families through initiatives designed to tackle these inequities. Programs like the Explore Next Door Youth Enrichment Program and the SOAR Afterschool Program were created to provide essential educational support, mentorship, and opportunities for BIPOC youth to thrive.

These programs are not just about academic achievement; they foster safe, nurturing environments where young people can see themselves reflected in their mentors and feel empowered to overcome challenges. BSF's holistic approach integrates academics with social-emotional learning, cultural pride, and outdoor experiences that connect students to their heritage.

To date, BSF has served 3,774 individuals, focusing on BIPOC youth, their families, and small business owners across San Diego. The impact is measurable—students in BSF programs consistently report increased confidence, academic improvement, and a stronger sense of identity and community. BSF is committed to redesigning the playing field, ensuring every young person has access to the resources and opportunities they deserve.
