Our Story

Founded in 1982 by a dedicated group of biologists and veterinarians, Bighorn Institute focuses on the conservation of the endangered Peninsular desert bighorn sheep. This privately funded, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization conducts vital research and education initiatives to combat the decline of wild sheep populations. Through collaboration with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Institute has expanded its efforts to support wild sheep projects across ten western states and internationally.

Impact

Over the past 35 years, Bighorn Institute's programs have successfully released 127 bighorn sheep into the wild, preventing the extinction of two local herds in California.
