Our Story

It all began in 1904 when Ernest Coulter, a juvenile court clerk in New York City, recognized the need for positive adult role models for fatherless boys. He recruited 50 volunteers, marking the inception of the Big Brothers movement. Over a century later, Big Brothers Big Sisters remains committed to this vision, providing children facing adversity with strong, enduring, and professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better.

Impact

Mentoring relationships can significantly alter the trajectory of young people's lives, steering them away from violence and risky behaviors towards sustainable opportunities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identifies mentoring as a key strategy for youth violence prevention. With the dedication of thousands of volunteers across South Texas, remarkable outcomes are achieved for the youth served.
