Beyond New Beginnings

Our Story

More than 40 years ago, the New Beginnings High School Program for pregnant and parenting teens was established in Chaska, Minnesota. This initiative aimed to support young mothers in their pursuit of high school diplomas by providing essential parent education and quality child care. While the New Beginnings program has thrived, the need for stable housing for these young families has always been evident.

In April 2019, Russ St. John recognized this pressing need during a Rotary meeting and took action. Alongside Sue Schmidt, the lead teacher at New Beginnings, and Jill Engeswick, a retired educator, they founded Beyond New Beginnings. With the support of the Carver County Community Development Agency (CDA), they secured an apartment building in downtown Chaska, featuring four two-bedroom apartments and a communal space for the program.

After extensive renovations by CDA, the first families moved in December 2020, and by May 2021, the program was at full capacity, serving four families. Weekly Empowerment classes and mentor support have been ongoing since November 2020, with dedicated volunteers providing meals and child care. Beyond New Beginnings is committed to supporting each family for one to two years, helping them achieve their unique plans for success and independence.
