Our Story

The Better Housing Coalition was founded in 1988 by Mary Tyler Cheek McClenahan and Carter McDowell in response to the pressing need for affordable housing in Richmond, Virginia. Initially established as the Richmond Better Housing Coalition, the organization has evolved into the largest nonprofit community development corporation in the region, focusing on building and renovating affordable housing.

Impact

With a commitment to revitalizing communities, the Better Housing Coalition has provided over 1,500 rental units and 200 homes for first-time buyers. Annually, approximately 1,100 residents benefit from support services aimed at enhancing their quality of life.
