Bethesda Fire Department
EIN: 52-0743537 · Chevy Chase, MD
Our Story
In 1925, a devastating fire destroyed two large homes in Bethesda, Maryland, prompting a group of civic-minded citizens, led by Walter Tuckerman, to take action. Recognizing the inadequacy of horse-drawn firefighting equipment, they held meetings, raised funds, and laid the groundwork for the Bethesda Fire Department. On July 4, 1925, six residents each donated $1,000 to kickstart this vital community service. This initiative sparked a series of planning meetings and fundraising events, revealing a strong interest in establishing a fire department in Bethesda.
On May 24, 1926, the Bethesda Fire Board was formed, and the Bethesda Fire Department, Inc. was officially established as a non-stock Maryland not-for-profit company. Contributors of $1,000 were granted a seat on the board, ensuring community representation. Tuckerman, who was also the President of the Bank of Bethesda, generously donated land for the first fire station, which was dedicated in December 1926 and named Fire Station 5. The department began operations with two 1926 American LaFrance pumpers, one of which still participates in community celebrations today.
Initially manned by volunteers, the Bethesda Fire Department transitioned to a fully paid service on July 1, 1939, with Angelo J. Bargagni as its first Fire Chief. As the community grew, so did the need for enhanced fire protection. In 1957, Fire Station 20 was established, followed by the opening of additional stations to meet the increasing demands of the area.
Over the decades, the Bethesda Fire Department has evolved, maintaining its commitment to fire suppression, emergency medical services, and fire safety education. In 1988, as Montgomery County professionalized its fire services, Bethesda Fire Department, Inc. continued to oversee the care and improvement of its three fire stations, ensuring that the community receives the highest level of service.
