Our Story

Founded in 2012 by Father Emmanuel Katongole, Father Cornelius Ssempala, and Father Anthony Rweza, Bethany Land Institute (BLI) emerged from a deep concern for the interconnected issues of deforestation, food insecurity, and poverty in rural Uganda. Inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical letter, Laudato Si’, the founders envisioned a transformative educational program that cultivates a holistic approach to land care, food production, and economic expertise. Situated on a 95+ acre plot in Luwero, Uganda, BLI serves as a living demonstration of integral ecology, fostering a sustainable lifestyle and spirituality.

Our Impact

BLI is dedicated to measuring its impact through both quantitative and qualitative methods. Regular data collection from Caretakers on the ground allows for tracking their progress and the long-term results of their education. Additionally, ongoing assessments of the flora and fauna on campus help illustrate the positive effects of our initiatives on the environment.
