Betances Health Center
EIN: 13-2697725 · New York, NY
Our Story
In the summer of 1969, the Judson Memorial Church initiated the 'East Village Youth Project' to address the health needs of the transient hippie population in the East Village. Local activist Paul Ramos recognized the broader health challenges faced by low-income, minority adolescents in the area. By October 1970, the program evolved into the Betances Health Unit, named after the 19th Century Puerto Rican physician, poet, and patriot, Dr. Ramón Emeterio Betances. This transformation marked the beginning of a dedicated effort to provide essential health services to the predominantly immigrant Latino community of the Lower East Side.

Today, Betances Health Center serves over 6,000 underserved patients each year, ensuring that quality health care is a basic right for all, regardless of their ability to pay.
