Our Story
The Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) was established in 1933 during the Great Depression to offer affordable housing and food to university students facing economic hardships and discrimination. Over the years, BSC has grown into the largest student housing cooperative in the United States, with over 1300 members residing in 17 houses and 3 apartment complexes around UC Berkeley.
Impact
BSC significantly reduces living costs for students, enabling access to higher education for those with limited financial resources. By maintaining low rents and expanding facilities, BSC accommodates students from marginalized backgrounds.
