Our Story

The Benjamin Banneker Association was founded in 1986 by seven dedicated African-American mathematics educators. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by Black children in mathematics education, the organization has evolved from its initial activities into a powerful advocate for equity and excellence in education. Incorporated in 1991, the BBA has become a significant force in the mathematics education community across North America.
