Our Story
The Bel Air Downtown Alliance began as the Bel Air Downtown Task Force, established to oversee the Downtown Market Study. This initiative identified successful business types and locations in Bel Air. From 1999 to 2001, the Task Force evolved into the Bel Air Downtown Revitalization Alliance, focusing on economic development in downtown Bel Air. In 2001, the Alliance was founded as a 501(c)(3) Maryland Main Street program, leading to significant revitalization efforts.
One of the key achievements was the transformation of the historic Armory building into a vibrant event center, complete with offices and a garden music venue. This revitalization inspired nearby property owners to enhance their structures, resulting in a wave of improved facades. As new businesses, retail shops, and services returned to downtown, so did visitors and employment opportunities. The resurgence of employment led to a flourishing restaurant scene, with every establishment offering enticing lunch specials and after-work incentives.
Through the effective use of historic building tax credits, the town’s revolving loan fund, and Community Development Block Grants, the Alliance has successfully ignited the spark of redevelopment. In 2003, the organization was renamed the Bel Air Downtown Alliance, continuing its mission under the four pillars of Maryland Main Street programs: Design, Organization, Economic Vitality, and Promotion.
