Our Story
The Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corps (BSVAC) was founded in 1988 by Captain James “Rocky” Robinson and Specialist Joe Perez as the nation’s first multi-racial volunteer ambulance corps. Established to address the emergency medical service crisis in New York’s minority communities, BSVAC has become a vital resource in Bedford-Stuyvesant and beyond.
Impact
Responding to over 1,200 emergency calls annually, BSVAC has reduced response times to under 4 minutes. The organization has trained over 2,000 local residents in emergency medical care, fostering the next generation of EMTs and healthcare professionals.
