Our Story

Founded in 1981, Because You Care, Inc. was established to abolish the use of decompression chambers for euthanasia in Pennsylvania. Since then, this volunteer-driven organization has focused on rescuing stray dogs and cats in Erie, PA, and surrounding areas. With no public funding, all rescued pets receive essential veterinary care, including vaccinations and spaying or neutering. Once ready for adoption, pets are moved to a welcoming adoption center where cats enjoy a cage-free environment and dogs have spacious kennels with outdoor access. Volunteers ensure that each dog is walked multiple times a day, and potential adopters are carefully screened to find the perfect match for each pet.

Our Impact

Because You Care is committed to addressing companion animal overpopulation through proactive measures. All pets are spayed and neutered, and microchipping is included in the adoption process to help lost animals return home. The organization has also launched a spay/neuter and release program for feral cats, allowing them to live outdoors while ensuring they are vaccinated and sterilized.
