In 1990, the tragic loss of a daughter to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) ignited a passion within a grieving parent to make a difference in the lives of children. This journey led to the founding of Because One Matters, an organization dedicated to supporting foster children and young adults in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The mission is clear: to equip, connect, and advocate for the most vulnerable members of our community.

A Journey of Hope and Action

After years of contemplation and encouragement from friends and family, the desire to serve foster children blossomed into action in 2013. The first step was a simple email asking for donations to sponsor a foster child for Christmas. The overwhelming response resulted in a successful campaign that provided gifts worth $400. This initial success fueled a greater vision to create lasting change.

In May 2014, the first carnival was organized to celebrate National Foster Care Month, bringing joy and awareness to the community. The vision expanded to include quarterly birthday parties for foster children, ensuring that every child experiences the joy of a birthday celebration, something many have never had.

Creating Lasting Impact

Recognizing the instability faced by many foster children, Because One Matters also provides essential personal items to those entering the system. Many children arrive with their belongings in garbage bags, a stark reminder of their difficult circumstances. To combat this, the organization offers book bags filled with personal gifts, allowing children to keep their most cherished items close as they navigate their journey through foster care.
