Bear Creek Development Center
EIN: 84-1884979 · Rochester, MN
Our Story
In 2010, Bear Creek Church recognized the urgent need for safe and affordable housing in the Rochester area. Starting with mobile home parks, the church mobilized volunteers to repair homes at cost, utilizing donated materials whenever possible. Over the years, this initiative evolved into The Shelter Project, overseen by Bear Creek Development Center (BCDC), which now engages volunteers from various local churches and the greater Rochester community.
In 2016, the closure of Crossroads College presented an opportunity for BCDC. A year later, a handshake agreement led to the conversion of the college campus into Mayowood Acres, an affordable housing complex and nonprofit center. By June 2018, BCDC formally purchased the campus, aiming to support individuals and families striving to regain stability. Today, Mayowood Acres features 43 apartments, ranging from single rooms to four-bedroom units, alongside commercial spaces.
Impact
Bear Creek Development Center has successfully transformed a former college campus into a thriving affordable housing complex, providing essential support to individuals and families in need. Through community partnerships and generous donations, BCDC offers affordable rents to those earning less than 50% of the area median income.
